Incision is made superficial to avoid deep critical anatomy. An opening designed for a drainage (penrose, jackson-pratt, etc.) should be large enough to drain suppuration. Deep tissue dissection is performed by bluntly. And the purpose of a drain is primary to change the localized flora from anaerobic to aerobic.
