Amalgam is condensed in order to 1. adapt the amalgam to the cavity walls, floor and margins. 2. develop a uniform compact mass with minimum voids. 3. reduce excess mercury content. 4. overbuild the restoration to allow ‘carve back’ to eliminate the mercury-rich outer layer.
