Intrapulpal hemorrhage and lysis of erythrocytes are a common result of traumatic injury to a tooth. Blood disintegration products, presumably iron sulfides, flow into the tubules and discolor the surrounding dentin. If the pulp becomes necrotic, the discoloration persists and usually becomes more severe with time. If the pulp recovers, the discoloration may be reversed, with the tooth regaining its original shade.
